Salutations, my hairless friends.
Weird Ape back again, with much exciting news on this year’s cool watches and what’s on trend. I’ve been hanging around, mixing with the movers and the shakers of the watch world, and am here to report back to you on what’s in this season, alongside my usual weird and wonderful wares.
For years, brands have been championing the remake – vintage classics revamped into modern, stylish replicas. This year, designs show nostalgia with a twist; rather than lifting the looks straight from the history books, the big names are creating new watches that simply pay homage to the aesthetics that were popular decades ago. This is making way for unique styles that tip the hat to the antiquarian watches of days-gone-by.
Take the Excelsior Magnum Gold, a perfect example of a modern model that sympathetically breathes life into a traditional look – with its wide open dial, exposed golden mechanics and classic roman numerals. Word in the trees is that this style of heritage-inspired appearance is nothing short of bang on trend, and a must for those that are clued up on cool watches.
As a dapper ape, with my finger firmly on the fashion pulse, I also give you the Abbrecci Gentleman – my take on the perfect amalgamation of conventional beauty and high-tech spec. Its unspoilt face is complimented by the faultless rhythm of the second hand, ticking round in a soothing Japanese quartz movement, with the battery working seamlessly through a quartz crystal. The piece is secured to your wrist on a high-quality leather strap in a rich chocolate brown, so this watch isn’t just for telling the time – it’s a bona fide fashion statement.
Other hallmarks to watch – excuse me – out for are slim cases; thinner, more subtle designs that challenge the clunky contemporary models of recent years. Understated colour schemes are in too, with hues of woody colours for the gentlemen and dusky greens and teals for the ladies. For the fashion-forward, the Vita Green Heart channels a jade-coloured woven strap, intricate beaded detail and unique flower-shaped face, exemplifying classic, ethereal chic. I adore this particular piece – the vivid colour reminds me of the lush green leaves of the Congo, and I feel wistful whenever I wear it. (In private, of course. It is a ladies watch after all.)
Enthused watch collectors, like myself, have forever celebrated traditional, mechanical watches and the master craftsmanship that goes into creating them. With technology evolving and smartwatches on the scene, it’s welcoming to see watch trends reflecting our appreciation of the timeless, traditional classics.
You humans never fail to fascinate me – I’ve noticed that with the steampunk movement snowballing, uniting old and new is more popular than ever before. By combining touches from the past with elements of the future, my collection is made up of an eclectic mix of unusual and rare designs – the ultimate in cool watches. It seems this year, the trend shall be no different, making me one very happy (albeit Weird) Ape.
Until next time.
